Hercules-HPC-embrioled in a bitter proxy battle buys a new company. A lot of people have speculated that HPC would be sold and broken up. Mario G one of them. Mister Sam is using his usual tactics to put the company in play, but no takers for the whole thing. Just, GE buying the Betz division. The company's fundamentals however are improving on their own.

WILMINGTON, Del. (Dow Jones)--Hercules Inc.'s (HPC) Denmark-based FiberVisions unit agreed to acquire polypropylene fiber maker Meraklon SpA for an undisclosed amount, a deal expected to add to 2004 earnings.

In a press release Friday, the chemical specialties company said the performance-based payment schedule will also lead to a positive cash flow after 12 months.

Strategically, Hercules said the acquisition will broaden its product offerings, raise its capacity and expand its reach to markets in southern Europe and the Middle East.

Meraklon's polypropylene and FiberVisions' polyolefin fibers are used in diapers, textiles, upholstery and carpets.

The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter.
