Industrial production data today does not offer much hope demand for energy will be increasing soon. Perhaps military fuel consumption will offset reductions in consumer demand.

U.S. Industrial Production Decreased 0.8% in August

By Carlos Torres and Vincent Del Giudice

Washington, Sept. 14 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. industrial production fell in August for an 11th straight month and this week's terrorist attack may extend the factory slump as consumers spend less.

Production at factories, mines and utilities fell 0.8 percent after falling 0.1 percent a month earlier, Federal Reserve figures showed. The string of declines is the longest since February- December 1960, the Fed said.

The deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history has already disrupted production at Ford Motor Co. and may lead to reduced consumer spending, suggesting factories will be hard pressed to end their year-long slump.
