Mike - Long Distance? The words sound like the Telegraph tapping out Morse Code to me.
>>>BA is backpeddling on their ADSL committment. They used to say 1q97. Do you see it coming soon? I work in the industry, I have good friends at many carriers, suppliers, etc.. One of the RBOCs main concerns is if ADSL should have the money spent on it now, or is it better spent pursuing other paths such as long distance $$ in a huge profit industry.<<<
Back Pedeling ADSL, $$ better spent pursuing long distance?
First do you think all these mergers are about long distance?
BT & MCI BA and Nynex to merge soon. GTE & ATT a possiblity...
Wake up, it's almost the 21st century!
These mergers are not happening because of long distance as we know it!
You can read and believe what you want, but like the writers that say ISDN will out pace ADSL, they are way off the mark...
As a Telco are you going to let people side step your long distance charges by using Internet Telephony.. Perhaps you think this technology will just go away.
Early in 1996 Netscape acquired Insoft with it came LiveMedia. Netscapes LiveMedia will provide support for Internet Telephony. Netscape is also well positioned to become the driving force behind standards in the Internet Telephony business, with many companies like Adobe, Silicon Graphics, Marcomedia, Digital, expressing support for LiveMedia.
There are actually two major standard efforts underway, NETSCAPE / IBM and INTEL/ MICROSOFT.
I see the two eventually working with each other, their combined efforts, along with others will unite Internet Telephony Industry.
OK back to the US Telcos. I see the telcos forming new media and emerging technology groups which will generate revenue from the Internet. It is very likely that one day you'll pick-up your telephone to dial an overseas number, and have the call routed through the Internet.
With the Tag Switching themes of Cisco's ATMs, and the ability to monitor your bit count, communicating with each Data packet and knowing what that data packet contains, the Telcos will be able to charge you for a variety of services, by the bit, and by speed & priority, if the wish. One can assume there are many equipments, regulations, and industries, that will feed on the future of the Internet, but ADSL/VDSL is the key underlying technology to allow this to be a reality, IMHO of course.
If one wants to invest, investing in today, is not the way to make money, invest in tomorrow, and you reap those rewards tomorrow brings. Of course one must be able to see passed the nose on ones face, in order to reap those rewards. (Statement not intended to be pointed at you - Mike)
When I see people in need of help, I have always tried to help when I can, and in the world of investing in emerging technologies, I've found the blind leading the blind, could use a pair of eyes.
