The public option is what Obama (and others) have proposed as a means to get universal health care; were it not, we might have been further along in this process.

The relevant point here is that people want universal health care so long as they don't have to pay for it. A lot of them are fine with a "public option" to get it, so long as they don't have to pay for it.
