ElM, there is a logical problem with the "return to their natural size" idea. <The US will return to its natural size and Asian economies will grow to their natural size. > If things are bound to return to their natural size, then they must already be there and always have been there. But self-evidently they are not already there. There is no apparent upper bound as can be seen by the difference between Rwanda and Singapore or Togo and Hong Kong. The lower bound is very low though above zero, somewhere near hunter-gatherer levels.

While TJ thinks China's trend is to The New Sovereign with splendiferous glories to come, the facts of life for the bloke in the hutong is that life is not particularly good even if some dumb commie party thug doesn't come and beat them up for saying life is less than perfect. When we see hordes of people busting into China as illegal immigrants, we could think that China has got it going quite well. But at present, people are busting out as best they can, doing anything to get into places like New Zealand to catch a free ride on the centuries of effort building the place which the dumb New Zealanders seem happy to provide.

There is no upper bound ElM. The upper limit is set by the willingness of citizens to adopt Virtuous Victorian Values. As they adopt those values, their prosperity increases. To the extent they abandon them, eudaimonia fizzles. Greeks invented the word eudaimonia and Greece was once glorious. Now it's a sorry joke, albeit still in a wonderful location and no doubt the souvlaki is still excellent. Hubris is also a word from Greece and hubris can be a problem setting an upper bound. Steve Jobs has not demonstrated hubris and Apple has not found an upper bound. Countries do not have to become hubritic either as long as they maintain VVV. TJ is already chock a block with hubris and self adulation for Hong Kong and even China while China is hardly worthy of a second glance as a delightful place to live to share in VVV endemic in the streets and countryside.

Switzerland has maintained a very high level for a very long time and does not demonstrate hubris. Switzerland remains a great place to live with high levels of Virtuous Victorian Values.
They are not showing signs of "returning to their natural size".
