Bruce: Another thing that's going on very much in technology world search for CEO of apple. From time to time I hear Dell Yoachum
put out there. Are you at all interested in the job? Have you talked to the search committee?

Well, you know, the '80s was very exciting for me at apple and it was certainly an era of hardware. The '90s for me in Borland and
software and I'm very excited about what we're doing at Borland.

Bruce: You're staying put at Borland not talking to the apple folks?

Well, I'm excited about what we're doing for the future.

Bruce: so are you interested at all in that job?

I'm interested in what I'm doing at Borland.

Those are the exact words (who's Dell Yoachum? - talk about butchering a name). Look at the last question which was persistently put to pin Del down I think - sounds to me like the give-and-take amounted to:

Q. Do you like apples?
A. I like oranges.

(It does not matter that he did not say "No, I don't like apples, I like oranges.")

Getting away from semantics. When he was at the other company he turned around (darn the name escapes me now T....) he waited until he got the job done. When he worked at apple he waited what was it 4-6 years. It seems to me that he waits to get the job done - not jump ship early.

If he said it will take 8 quarters of profitability to state conclusively that BORL's back (today's exuberance notwithstanding - check out the reception - the guy has now pretty much done a remarkable job already - time to toot one's horn a bit - no harm here - he's doing a good job so far) then he most likely would wait a few more quarters at least. Is he going to be here until he's 70? Nope - the guy just "un-retired" to take on the BORL challenge. At some point those fishing lures will pull him back. But not until he gets the job done.

Why didn't he say no? For the same reason that a good card player does not show his hand early. Why not grease the money wheel a bit? Make the BORL board sweat out the possibility of him leaving for awhile. Why not - BORL needs Del much more than Del needs BORL.

Top quality mgt. = big bucks...
