1400....Williams-Sonoma is cutting 1,400 positions and closing two support centers to cope with slowing sales in the tough economy.

The high-end kitchen and home company says it will make the cuts by the end of the month. They will affect 18 percent of the full-time staff, a call center in Camp Hill, Penn., and a distribution facility in Memphis, Tenn.

The moves are expected to save Williams-Sonoma an estimated $75 million.

The financial dilemma faced by Williams-Sonoma is a common one among retailers. The company has seen its sales fall as consumers limit their discretionary spending. Earlier this month, Williams-Sonoma reported that its same-store sales dropped 24.2 percent over the holidays.
