Have you discussed this with Larry Dudash?

He has used a system whereby he plots a standard deviation channel and uses changes in the distance between the channel boundaries to decide if a trend is broken or intact. This has similarities to your comments on how a "misbehaving" bar indicates a change of trend, although you are doing it on a bar by bar basis.

I will send him a message to look at this thread.
