KVH taps Cyan for 100G submarine network backhaul

Tokyo-based KVH has selected packet-optical transport systems and the Blue Planet software-defined networking (SDN) platform from Cyan (NYSE: CYNI) to upgrade backhaul links for a pair of submarine network cable landing stations in Japan. The upgrade comes as the undersea cable networks connected to the landing stations evolve to support 100-Gbps wavelengths.

The cable landing stations, in Chikura and Toyohashi, will now have 100-Gbps backhaul capabilities to central Tokyo and Osaka. These enhanced data rates will serve the increasing bandwidth needs of KVH's global service provider, Internet content provider, and carrier customers for KVH's DCNet service. From the landing stations, these customers can be linked to more than 60 data centers and more than 120 points of presence in the greater metropolitan areas of Tokyo and Osaka.

"Cloud services, content delivery, wholesales services, and more are driving big bandwidth growth and new service offerings across the APAC region," explains Gint Atkinson, vice president of network strategy and architecture, KVH. "KVH is ensuring we can capitalize on this trend by expanding our backhaul network beyond 10 Tbps for 100G services with Cyan. Ultimately, this will help us differentiate ourselves in the market and become the leading solution for dedicated connectivity in Japan's main metropolitan areas."
