Diplomatic sources in Cairo said they expect the US to direct a military strike at Iraq in October if Baghdad continues its refusal to cooperate with the UN committee charged with searching for weapons
of mass destruction in that country.

The Internet-based ARABIC NEWS reported at the weekend that the sources said the US had "informed France, Russia, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Egypt that it expect[ed] to be supported in military operations
against Iraq if Baghdad continued its current status".

The sources said Washington had reached an understanding with France and Russia after the US agreed earlier this year to delay plans for a strike at Iraq in favour of a mediation effort by UN 's secretary-general Kofi Annan.

"In case of Iraq's insistence on its current status, the military operations will aim at weakening the Iraqi regime to the utmost degree in order not to defy the Security Council's resolution," the sources told ARABIC NEWS.
