Germany has always been the home of a strong but still latent anti American sentiment and that became obvious to me when I moved there in 1974.

Not so sure it is anti-American as much as a deep-seated feeling they are the natural leader because they are smarter and work harder. My ex-wife used to tell me often how hard Germans work compared to Americans. That they get more done in less time because of all of the coffee breaks, water cooler time, etc. that Americans take. Given that she never really worked next to anyone else in the US, I suspect a lot of that feeling comes from the media and is subconscious. I feel there is little doubt that they think even worse of the others in the EU.
