>>Re. my perception of the tech. advant. of amtx at this point in time. I know I may get landed on here by others much more knowledgeable about the electronics ind.. However, I guess I feel that, since amtx is required to license the tech., under reasonable terms, to other mfgrs., the first advant. is the dif. in cost that exists between amtx and its license holders by the existence of the fee itself. At this point, amtx is prob. at a sig. cost disadvant., in the cost of mfgr of the product itself, to a well estab. mfgr of these types of devices (i.e. usrx). Economy of scale and scope, along with the learning curve, are the reasons. Certainly, these are daunting challenges.<<<<
True Amati " is required to license the tech., under reasonable terms, to other mfgrs." But they do not have to give it away either. I don't know what defines "reasonable terms". But apparently they thought the offer by PairGain was unreasonable. 3% on no co-production.
>>Successful implementation of such a strategy requires very smart people, with enormous energy, who are motivated by more than the money itself.( i.e. Bill Gates ain't workin' for the dough anymore.)<<<
There is a relationship here, Bill Gates & company came along at the right stage in technology, with the right code, at the right time.
Where would Bill be if IBM had took him up on his offer to buy PC DOS? Bill almost gave the bird away, for 1970's vintage dollars.
IBM did not think the Desktop PC would not be that popular, and Licensed PC DOS..
Just another reason why I feel Amati would sell out to anyone, peacefully. Sell the Goose that laid the Golden egg?
Back in 1Q 96, when I found that Jim Gibbons was on the Board at Cisco, I could see the potential. Why would these two companies not partner? It's obvious that they would make a great team. Around summer time, I began to see that Amati "seemed" to be concentrating on an ADSL Ethernet solution only. Maybe Cisco was working on the ATM/ADSL solution? By the time I left Supercomm, having had conversations with Dr. Cioffi, Jim Steenburgen, I was feeling much better about my investment.
You can read comments all day long, but until you've met and heard these talented people first hand, you can not grasp the "veracity" that they generate.
Jim Steenbuergen - Bold and Articulate Statements.
Imagine your out mowing the lawn and you accidentally mowed two ft. over into the neighbors yard, running the mower over a area where your neighbor had just planted some petunias seeds. You knew he was a little crazy, but when he came out with an M16 Rifle pointed at you were to say the least a little surprised, and scared. It's at this point Jim Steenburgen Rolls Up in an M1 Tank, and asks your neighbor to quietly go back in to his home.
Pat covered my thoughts on Dr. John Cioffi quite well:
"He's the genius behind DMT and is honored from one end of the globe to the other. Anyone who doubts his position in the ADSL community hasn't done his or her homework. His list of accomplishments and honors has no equal. "
("behind ADSL/DMT algorithms") jw
For more on Dr. Cioffi you may want to purchase a tape from a video series entitled: HIGH TECH HEROS

Back in Jan. 96 I read (somewhere) that officers of this company had many connections to large companies in the Telecommunications Field. Just one of the reasons on my list, of why I choose Amati, as my first buy in DSL related stocks. My list included statements from Pete Chow PHd. Stanford U. / Amati, on the ADSL discussion forum, and it helped Amati owned the patents on the ANSI/ETSI ADSL standard, and MOT licensing Amati technology, another.
It seems software becomes a part of Amati's profit sernerio, with the TI Chip.
TI is a world leader and now Amati has their distribution channel and their tech support.
At this point in time I can not be assured that the VDSL standard will be Amati's technology solely.
Though IMHO, I feel the standard "will include" Amati's technology. As I feel the standard may contain a combination of technologies, we are familiar with. But there is not enough info from T1E1.4 to get a feeling for where we are truly headed at this time.
