I am thinking about a new laptop and I have some questions about processors. Namely, what would likely be the effective difference to me between i3 and i5?

I have fairly common requirements: Word, not overly complicated spreadsheets, web-surfing, watching an occasional YouTube video, StockCharts annotations, and etc.

What do the Hertz ratings mean in multi-core environments? Are they meaningful like they used to be?

Is there some site that compares these things?

How do I know which AMD processors are equivalent to which Intel models?

My decade old laptop is a bit slow, but serviceable but the optical drive and the battery charger are failing, so I figure I need to replace it while it is still running. It has a Pentium 4 CPU running at 2.8 GHZ.

While I am at it I want to get something that is fast enough for the future stuff that will come down the line.

Thoughts and ideas?

Blessings,

JRH
