Inode,
We had around 85% coverage, and the other 15% *DID* have access to the best health care in the world. It just wasn't as easy.
I can't imagine how hard it is for the 15% who don't have insurance. But then again, isn't that why we have Medicaid?
We should have been concerned about addressing the needs of that 15%, but that isn't what was done. We threw out the things that made ours the best system in the world and tried to "even out" the quality of care. What we ended up with is still about 15% (14%, whatever) uninsured, but a far more difficult climb for those 14% who are now uninsured.
The people who advocate universal health care (or steps to get there such as ObamaCare) can't simply sell the idea on the singular goal of reducing the number of uninsured. They have to answer the question of "What's in it for me?"

So they portray universal health care as a panacea for everyone, including those who already have insurance but are uncomfortable with rising premiums and health insurance companies who won't pay for every procedure under the sun.

I've always said that laws like ObamaCare will only succeed in reducing the number of uninsured, which itself may be an admirable goal. But to oversell it as a panacea is wrong, and the people who did just that should be held accountable.

Of course, since we aren't at the "promised land" of single-payer yet, these people will continue portraying it as a panacea.
