Matsushita and Ericsson will focus on third generation mobile phones. The phones enable transmission of large amounts of data over the internet. The phones will use the W-CDMA – wideband code division multiple access – standard. Japanese electronics groups are particularly interested in expanding their share of the European market. Matsushita Communication, Matsushita’s mobile phone arm, is considering building its second plant in Europe if demand increases significantly next year.
