I read an article in the Boston Globe this evening about Tritium networks tritium.net. It's going to be offering free internet access in Boston as well as other major cities. The only catch is that you'll have to be running their application which puts ads on the bottom of your screen. The internet has changed a lot in the last few years, and further changes will be happening. These estimates for 1999 have a lot of risk built into them, as no one really knows what the internet access business will look like in a few years from now.

Here's a quote from the article: (http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe/globehtml/054/Cincinnati_firm_to_offer_free_e_mai.htm )
Besides, Lee says his firm has already lined up alliances with major organizations boasting millions of members. Lee wouldn't identify the organizations, but said they would soon begin advertising Tritium Network service to their members.

Lee said that he expects to have a million users signed up by autumn.

If they can really get a million members by autumn, I'd imagine that would affect AOL's growth and retention rates, not to mention the pressure it would put on keeping AOL's prices low.
