MPs paint gloomy economic picture

MPs paint a gloomy picture of Britain's economic prospects in a survey.

Even Labour backbenchers are more pessimistic about the outlook for UK plc than at any time in the last two years, according to the poll by CommunicateResearch.

It quizzed 153 MPs and found that 40% expect economic growth to get worse over the next 12 months, double the proportion last year.

And 44% of MPs expect unemployment to continue to increase in the next year compared to just 13% in 2004.

The MPs of all parties were less pessimistic about interest rates with 51% expecting them to fall in the next 12 months. In 2004, 84% predicted a rise.

Only 26% are predicting that inflation will get worse, compared to 53% in 2004.

Labour MPs had switched from being overwhelmingly positive about the prospects for growth and unemployment in the year leading up to the general election to being negative, the survey showed.
