Please don't misunderstand my intent

This is a worthwhile thread and the subject is an important one. However, there is a lot of hype on this subject and I think we should try to focus on what is known rather than what can be imagined.

There is a counterbalancing thread here on SI at Subject 15277 which should also be looked at. The skeptical view seems to be shared by a number of high-profile folks too. See, for example, David Starr's (CIO of Reader's Digest) views at computerworld.com

I don't think anyone believes that there won't be problems associated with Y2K. But the question is one of quantification. Folks deal with problems on a routine basis every day, but to imply that we'll be plagued with accidents and explosions without citing a single specific known example of such seems less than responsible reporting.
