PRESARIO FREEZE-UPS FOUND TO BE SOFTWARE-RELATED
Last month, I mentioned that some Compaq Presario 5800 or 5900 users had been complaining of system freeze-ups--apparently caused by too many programs competing for limited resources at startup. Compaq's consumer public relations manager, Hedy Baker, has confirmed that the problem is purely software-related and has nothing to do with hardware.
It seems the culprit is Service Connections, software that connects to the Internet automatically and sends users new BIOS updates and performance-boosting upgrades. If a PC has low system resources, making this connection bogs down the system and it appears to freeze.
