This month,a report by Disk/Trend Inc.,a Mountain View,Calif-based-market-research firm, noted explosive growth for the high-capacity floppy market.Shipments of high capacity floppy drives were just short of a million units last year and will exceed 5 million this year.By 1999,the high-capacity drive market will take 25.5 million drives, compared with 106 million 3.5-inch,1.44-Mbyte floppy drives.Though Zip drives, which cost about $200 and offer 100 Mbytes of removable storage, dominate the market, the Disk/Trend notes that competition is heating up.

"additional high-capacity floppy-drive formats now entering the market, some of which also provide backward compatibility for standard 1.44-Mbyte diskettes, are expected to make this product area a major battlefield of competing standards,as shipments move up to the projected 25.5 million drives in 1999,"said the reports author Jim Porter and Robert Katzvie
