Gameboy games a significant source of revenue again?
With the impending launch of the Color Gameboy, I'm seeing more and more companies with upcoming Gameboy releases. Color Gameboy looks to be one of THE Christmas boutique items this year. I know I'll be buying one when it is released, just for fun.
That said, I was pondering what a successful slate of games, A Bug's Life, The Rugrats Movie, Small Soldiers, and Disney's Mulan, on a hot platform, might generate for revenue. Back when I got into THQ, Gameboy games were providing the engine for the rapid growth we see now. Will this be a resurgent area of revenue for them?
In the 3 months ended September 30, 1997, Gameboy games made up a full 48% of revenues, but that dropped to only 4.8% in 1998. I think this could become a 'sleeper' area of revenue for them, not necessarily making gains in % of revenue, but definitely adding to the bottom line.
Just another thing for the shorts to ponder going into the next quarter... |
