[One more in the CAP Camp]
PHOENIX, Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- AG Communication Systems announced today it has signed a licensing agreement with GlobeSpan Technologies to include GlobeSpan's carrierless amplitude/phase (CAP) modulation transceiver technology in its ATIUM(TM) GateWay, an end-to-end digital subscriber line (xDSL) solution. "We chose CAP transceivers for four reasons: power, space, availability and flexibility," says Mark Emery, ATIUM business director. CAP is a proven technology available today. While other transceiver technologies are in first-generation packaging, CAP has evolved to third- generation packaging. As a result, it's smaller in size and has lower power consumption than other transceiver technologies, such as discrete multitone (DMT). "Because CAP technology is inherently less complex in terms of algorithms, it doesn't have as much work to do," explains Emery. "CAP saves service providers from paying high electrical costs and from paying for additional battery back-ups to maintain the DSL service if there's a power outage." Notes Emery, "CAP technology also emits lower energy levels in the loop, protecting services such as ISDN that could pick up some of the higher energy interference and suffer distortions or signal loss." As for space, CAP line cards and modems are about half the size of current DMT versions. "Neither service providers nor consumers want more space-hogging equipment -- space is already at a premium at the central office and consumers' desktops," notes Emery. The Globespan Technologies CAP transceiver solution also offers more flexibility in terms of speed. AG Communication Systems will initially offer the 1.5 Mbps version in the GateWay. The 1.5 Mbps rate can serve more subscribers than higher rates because of its longer reach. It is perfectly suited to high-speed Internet access and telecommuting applications. "We wanted to start with a service that can serve everyone in the public network," says Emery. "Because of the limits of today's network architecture, only 1.5 makes it to the edges of the network and makes tariffing possible. And it's also a speed that fits very well with the existing data networks of PCs, routers, hubs and switches." Throughout 1997, AG Communication Systems will provide rate adaptive capabilities and increase the speed of the ATIUM GateWay using GlobeSpan CAP transceiver chip sets as market applications evolve and network capabilities increase. The ATIUM GateWay is an end-to-end xDSL solution from AG Communication Systems. The solution will officially roll out at Comnet in Washington, D.C., in February at booth 1932, where live demonstrations of the GateWay will be shown. The GateWay will be offered as an integrated solution for AG Communication Systems' GTD-5(R). EAX digital switching systems, a stand-alone solution compatible with industry-standard central office switches, and a remote solution for digital loop carrier applications. GlobeSpan Technologies Inc. is the number one supplier of low-cost, high-performance chipsets for digital subscriber line (xDSL) equipment, offering solutions for ADSL, RADSL, SDSL and HDSL applications.
