Ericsson, Lucent win $600 million Saudi deal

Swedish cell phone giant Ericsson and faltering U.S. telecom Lucent Technologies have been awarded a $600 million contract to expand Saudi Arabia's wireless phone network, according to Saudi papers. The Arab News daily said Ericsson had won 60% of the deal to build infrastructure for more that 1.1 million cellular-phone customers in the country by 2002. Lucent will receive the remaining 40%. Cellular phone company Motorola backed out of a large part of an agreement it had signed last year with contract manufacturer Flextronics International , under which Flextronics was to manufacture Motorola products worth more than $30 billion. French art collector HubertGoldetHubert Goldet auctioned more than 600 pieces of his African art collection in Paris, garnering more than $10.3 million. Goldet spent more than 30 years compiling African artwork such as masks, statues and jewelry. The auction is considered one of the most significant African art sales in decades.
