Win98 compliant ...

As I understand it, to get the Win98 seal of approval on the box, software must meet a number of standards. I don't remember them all, but I think the 'seal' means the stuff works in a consistent way with the OS. UNinstalling through Control Panel is only one of many requirements. Interestingly, the software must also run under (over) Windows NT as well as Win98 to get the Win98 seal. This looks (to me) like Microsoft wants to introduce the world to NT and needs an early start at removing the barriers.

Curious observation: I downloaded the Win2000 readiness software and discovered my fairly new (11 months old) machine has a few 'issues' before I can upgrade. The funny thing is that my machine sports a sticker 'Designed for Microsoft WindowsNT Windows98' and Win2000 is supposed to replace WinNT.

The stability could become a compelling reason to upgrade, even if it means some extra work solving 'issues' first. It's annoying to lose your work when Excel is the only application open -- One would think that before including all the bells and whistles in Win98, they could've delivered reliable 'work horses' first.

Cheers, PW.
