WTC, who wrote this? He is not that well informaed and only spouting stuff we have all been told before. I believe he is wrong about scalability if HFC,MPEG and QAM,and also CDMA are being used to bolster the broadband network. HFC will be scalabel with WDM,CDMA and eventually to an All optical network, the TRUE holy grail of data communication. Remember with MPEG-2,QAM,each channel can pass data at the fastest rate of ADSL. ADSL is a brige towards fiber to the home eventually. As far as ADSL,the network will have to be upgraded also. Coils, switches etc.. will have to be replaced, then lines will have to be upgrade to the top quality copper available. ADSL is not as scalable as fiber,HFC is an interim connection to eventual AON,passive or switched. I think ADSL is more unpredictable than HFC,GTE is having trouble getting over 80% reliability, and won't qualify ADSL until they can guarantee connection, without dropping the line.
