Fonar: Profitable Patents

"Fonar Corp. (FONR 3 OTC) is an innovator in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) industry," notes Bill Mathews (The Cheap Investor, 2549 W. Golf Rd., Ste. 350, Hoffman Estates, IL 60194, 12 issues, $98). "The company owns the original MRI patent for diagnostic imaging and its products include the Quad 12000 (the only high-field, open MRI scanner), MRI mammography, and the recently introduced MRI operating room. Fonar aggressively defended its patents against several competitors. It receive unspecified awards from Siemens, Phillips, Hitachi and $128 million from GE Medical for patent infringement. A suit against Toshiba is still pending. It is positioned for explosive growth. Fonar has the potential to hit $5 to $10 in 1998."
