ROCKVILLE, Md.--(BW HealthWire)--Jan. 29, 2001--
Deal Includes Researchers at Ten California Campuses and Three U.S.
Department of Energy National Laboratories Managed by UC

Celera Genomics (NYSE:CRA), an Applera Corporation business,
announced today it signed a multi-year agreement with the University
of California (UC) system allowing UC investigators access to all of
Celera's database products. The UC system encompasses ten campuses
throughout California and three national laboratories -- Lawrence
Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
and Los Alamos National Laboratory. The UC subscribers will access
Celera's database information through its Celera Discovery System(TM).
Financial terms of the agreements were not disclosed.
"This agreement with the University of California system is
personally very gratifying because I earned my Ph.D. in physiology and
pharmacology at UC San Diego in 1975," said J. Craig Venter, Ph.D.,
Celera's president and chief scientific officer. "UC is one of the
world's largest higher education systems whose scientists are
recognized leaders in public research. I believe that access to
Celera's online portfolio of comparative genomic and genetic variation
information as well as the tools, software and computing power to
analyze these data, should advance medical research at UC and
worldwide."
"The faculty of the University of California has a long history of
working at the leading edge of science," said UC Provost Judson King.
"Celera's genome databases should ensure that our researchers have the
best tools to forge the frontiers of comparative genetics, evolution,
biochemistry and medicine as well as to educate the future scientific
leaders in these disciplines."
The Celera Discovery System is an integrated, web-based discovery
system that allows subscribers to use Celera generated databases,
additional non-proprietary genome and biological datasets,
computational tools and super-computing power to advance the discovery
programs of researchers worldwide.
