OK, this may seem a bit far afield, but does everyone realize how long it has been since the Dutch have seen political violence? The prime minister appealed for calm, but the slain candidate's supporters fought with riot police near parliament. Pim Fortuyn was shot and killed in the parking lot of a radio station where he had just given a campaign interview, nine days before elections in which his upstart anti-immigration party was expected to win up to 28 of the 150 seats in the Dutch parliament.
