Ericsson Launches Two Web-Enabled
Phones In Latin America

Dow Jones Newswires

SAO PAULO -- Swedish mobile phone manufacturer LM Ericsson
(ERICY) Tuesday launched two Web-enabled mobile phone models for
sale in Latin America.

The phones use Wireless Access Protocol, or WAP, technology, which
allows users to access e-mail and other Internet-based services.

Ericsson also launched two electronic accessories for the phones. One
device plugs into the phones and allows users to listen to FM radio stations
over headphones.

The other is a palm-sized keyboard for composing and transmitting short
text messages to wireless phones.

One of the phones, the A1228c, is Ericsson's first phone based on Code
Division Multiple Access, or CDMA, technology, which Ericsson has
already marketed in regions outside of Latin America.

The other phone, the R278d, runs on cellular networks using Time Division
Multiple Access, or TDMA, technology.

Meanwhile, the company said it has invested $30 million to double the
capacity at its industrial plant in the interior of Sao Paulo state.

Ericsson said it plans to produce 4.8 million phones by December 2000 at
the plant, an increase of 92% from 2.5 million units in 1999.

Phones produced at the plant are sold in Brazil and other Latin American
countries, Ericsson said.

Ericsson officials added that the company plans to spend $25 million on
marketing efforts in Brazil in 2000.
