Dow Chemical to Raise Crop Production to Meet Demand for Its Canola Oil With Zero Trans Fats

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Dow Chemical Co. on Thursday said it plans to increase crop production to meet demand for its trans fat-free canola oil, as more fast food restaurants make a switch away from artery-clogging cooking oils.

Dow subsidiary Dow AgroSciences LLC engineered the "high-stability" canola oil to have zero trans fat and lower saturated fat. Artificial trans fats are believed to increase the level of so-called "bad" cholesterol in the blood, clogging arteries and leading to heart disease.

"Because we are seeing an increase in demand for this 'next generation' oil, it's a natural step for us to follow with additional production," said David Dzisiak, head of Dow AgroSciences global oils division.

Separately, Taco Bell announced it would switch to the trans fat-free frying oil, which was developed by Dow and will be supplied by oilseed processor Bunge Ltd.

Taco Bell, which is owned by Yum Brands Inc., said all 5,000 of its single-brand restaurants in the United States will change from a partially hydrogenated soybean oil to a trans fat-free canola oil by April. About 100 restaurants have already made the change.
