Spain's Wireless Phone Customers Outnumber Traditional Service

--From AOL. I still hold this have everything to do with crappy, expensive wireline.-- Cooters

Madrid, April 12 (Bloomberg) -- Spain has become the second European country after Italy where wireless telephone customers surpassed the number of traditional, or fixed-line, clients, Expansion reported, citing Telefonica SA, Airtel SA and Retevision SA's Amena wireless phone unit. Adding the anticipated growth of 38,700 new wireless accounts per day to the results available to March 31, the three Spanish wireless phone companies' customers exceeded 17.9 million, more than the 17.7 million fixed phone lines in Spain, the paper said. Wireless phone accounts have increased 48 percent since 1999 in Spain and are estimated to reach 25 million this year, the paper said.

Telefonica SA controls 58.6 percent of the wireless phone lines, Airtel SA has 32.4 percent and Amena controls 9 percent.
