Terrence,
when you try to make children into paragons of reason you go against all observations made of children cross-curlturally for generations. Why do you think the Bible says "be as little children," 'cause the little tykes are gullible and capable of believing whatever they're told, except for things that are too reasonable(for instance that monsters don't exist, no kid ever believed that one.)

Most adults don't have imaginary friends (unless you want to consider Ayn and Jesus imaginary friends) but children commonly do, frequently to the consternation of their parents. Children do not make up these friends because their mystic parents encourage them to but rather because fantasy and magic is inherent in childhood. Because children by definition are immature they do not know enough of the world for it to make sense(or as much sense as it makes to us adults). When things do not make sense the human mind makes up an imaginary framework to help give structure to the senseless. That is what all belief systems are about.
