Cha2,

<< Isn't the equivalent of GRX already available in CDMA/HDR? >>

No.

cdmaOne Operators have not focused to any great degree on network to network roaming of any kind until relatively recently.

I mean first we talk about global voice roaming, then SMS roaming, then IP roaming.

This has been a major focus of GSMA for any number of years.

It is much more complex than just having a multi-mode phone.

It is just one of the several reasons that carriers are opting for UMTS over cdma2000.

It is kind of at the heart of my previous posts about the robust nature of data services in 3GPP GSM.

Let me give you an example.

I can roam nationally on Verizon at reasonable rates using a 800/1900 MHz CDMA phone.

CDMA is widely available in Brazil at 800 MHZ.

Wouldn't it seem logical that when I am in Brazil that I should be able to use place and receive calls on my Verizon phone?

Verizon now offers SMS text messaging. Hoo ha. Wouldn't it seem logical that I should be able to send an SMS text message to my friend across town who has an SMS enabled Sprint PCS phone?

This is all pretty much standard fare in GSM land.

I can place and receive calls on my VoiceStream mobile in 160 countries with a US phone number and subscription. My secretary can access the web and send me an SMS message when I'm in the UK.

Thats GSM. Thats GPRS. Thats 2GSM. Thats UMTS. Thats 3GSM.

Thats why speed and efficiency are not the only part of the decision making process on technology.

Thats why SKT & KTF just opted for 3GSM. Thats why LG tried.

<< Is an add on equivalent to GRX necessary for CDMA/HDR or is one built in there? >>

Its necessarry to compete with GSM/GPRS/UMTS heads up, IMO.

We are talking Anytime, Anywhere, voice and data communications on a global scale.

cdmaOne/cdma2000 standards include SMS, OTA, et al, and no reason roaming (voice and or data) can not be accomplished (were already seeing some cdma roaming apparatus pit in place).

It simply has not had the same emphasis and focus in CDMAland as it has in GSMland.

UTRA and UTRAN were dealt with pretty exhaustively in UMTS 'R99'. The focus of 'R2000' is services and enhancements to the IP network as I understand it.
