I always spend one day (okay, a quarter day, guys don't need whole days) shopping at Field's at Christmas time. They do a very nice job with Christmas. That particular Field's is probably my favorite store, aside from any Borders. It brings back many very good memories.

Actually, the Walgreen's across the street is even more special for me. When I was in my early teens I had a lazy right eye and had to wear a patch (for a year) and go for "eye exercises" once or twice a week. The eye doctor was in the building behind Field's. My mother would drive us to Archer Avenue on the near southwest side and we would take a bus the rest of the way downtown. After the appointment with the eye doctor we would always go to Walgreen's for ice cream. They are going to tear that Walgreen's down. Very sad. The trips downtown were adventures for me. Unfortunately, the north loop - "the Magnificent Mile" - has surplanted the old downtown.

I'm now in the role reversal part of my life. This morning I took my mother for her semi-annual blood test and in about an hour I will be taking her for a flu shot.

BTW, my mother's last dog was named Arthur, after King Arthur of course. The current inhabitant is named Harris, after Richard Harris, of course.

Rosemont, not Rosedown. One of the Chicago suburbs still rumored to have mob connections.
