The MILITARY planned and carried out the Afghanistan mission.

They did it in a way that would put U.S. troops at least jeopardy and use the present "assets" (Northern Alliance) as efficiently as possible.

No one can fault our military for doing its job (getting the Taliban out) in the best way possible.

One CAN fault our political leaders (BUSH?) for not taking into account the geopolitical consequences of relying on the Northern Alliance so totally that Afghanistan basically became a "central enclave of Kabul" surrounded by a virtual no man's land of fiefdoms.

Afghanistan is producing RECORD opium crops and just TRY driving outside Kabul without some major firepower as escort.

The elections are GREAT and are part of a VERY slow process in the eventual rehabilitation of that country.

But to say that the Afghanistan PROBLEM was handled in the best way possible seems a rather simplistic point of view.
