Rice: Place Japan on the UN Security Council

Blogs for Bush

While the EU entertains dreams of a separate EU seat on the UN Security Council (while, of course, retaining France and Britain's seats), Secretary Rice has a bit of a different idea:

<<<

She...offered support for Japanese membership in the U.N. Security Council as she prepared to visit South Korea...Concerning the U.N. Security Council, permanent membership is a long-standing Japanese goal. Rice's endorsement was the most explicit statement yet of U.S. support for Japan's request.

"Japan has earned its honorable place among the nations of the world by its own effort and by its own character," Rice said in her speech. "That is why the United States unambiguously supports a permanent seat for Japan on the United Nations Security Council."
>>>

Secretary Rice is correct: Japan has earned a place on the Security Council (France, on the other hand, never earned its place; in a bit of overgenerosity on our part, we insisted upon France getting a seat in 1945). Japan has been a steadfast ally of the United States and stands as a sentinel of liberty athwart the tyrannical government of China. Way past time that Japan got its due.
