This is the same reason why AMD has lower Athlon prices than Coppermine: to establish the platform. With comparable performance, the PC manufacturer's need a reason (price) to make the effort/investment to work with a different processor.

Of course, PC vendors should like the idea of having two suppliers to provide cost competition.
