Saturday, August 20, 2005 For the record: Michael Milken is not the Sith Lord
Entering stage left in a cameo role in the Overstock.com Wall Street soap opera, none other than Michael Milken. The New York Post reports:
Michael Milken is not the Sith Lord.
That's the legendary trader, white-collar criminal and philanthropist's response to rumors that he is the financier behind a campaign to slaughter shares of Overstock.com, as laid out in last week's mind-bending diatribe from the company's CEO.
Patrick Byrne, who runs the Internet shopping site, alleges a conspiracy against the company involving hedge fund Rocker Partners and research shop Gradient Analytics, and overseen by a master plotter.
Who the person behind Byrne's theory actually is has become a hotly debated topic on Overstock message boards, and the CEO has not backed down from his initial description of the Sith Lord as one of the "master criminals from the 1980s."
While the 1980s provided literally dozens of white-collar criminals to speculate on, Byrne made clear that the Sith Lord's identity was "something everybody would recognize."...
Through a spokesman, Milken said that he had "never heard of Overstock.com" until Thursday afternoon, when The Post contacted him.
He said that neither he, nor companies he has investments in, owns or has sold short any Overstock shares or options...
The spokesman said that any suggestion that Milken would have an idea who the Sith Lord was "is preposterous."
By process of elimination, can it now be deduced that Byrne is referring to Ivan Boesky?
