Hi Jack (no pun intended)- Yes Nortel is a networking behemoth that is selling both legacy and next generation technology, yes the bulk of their revenue is from more 'traditional' products, however the success of any company the size of Nortel is their willingness to cannibalize their existing technologies. All indications so far have been that Roth is focused on acquiring and developing technologies that will inevitably eat into itself. The inclusion of Nortel into any optical portfolio is mandatory IMHO- yes Ciena and Juniper may have more room to grow, but they also have an increased probability of demise. For example Juniper's high end routers are NOT going be able to process the amount of data traversing the networks in 5 years, their 'function' will be accomplished with optical switches by companies like Xros and the router will be relegated to the OEO 'layer' ( the edge, where 'high end' isn't necessarily better or cheaper)- these considerations are realistic- I view Nortel as a different type of investment (vis-a-vis Ciena) but crucial nonetheless.

by the way Tellium's CEO described the Xros switch PERFECTLY- because thats exactly the type of switch that will stupidly switch lamdas without thinking twice about it (minimizing the possibility of revolt from existential routers)
