Tero: In a recent publication, John Rubino mentioned IDCC. I had asked your opinion sometime ago regarding IDCC. As Jim says in his email to Mr. Rubino, "Nokia went to IDCC for help with 3G". Has your "take" changed in light of the partnership?
Here's Jim Lurgio's email:
"John,

Glad to see your onto IDCC . Seems most journalists think Qualcomm hold the keys to the castle regarding 3-G. How is it when Qualcomm says they hold essential IPR everyone listens and IDCC says they have essential IPR in all 5 standards no one listens? Even Qualcomm can't claim essential in all 5 standards.

In one interview Goldberg of IDCC stated IDCC had the engine and transmission for 3-G (air interface) and one person asked him to compare IDCC's patents to the Q's. He responded he would agrue the point that the interface patents would be the most lucrative of all. I believe that was a very strong message he sent that not to many heard.

Along with the insider accumulation you noted I thought you might like to know that the largest institutional owner of IDCC (Heartland Advisors) on 01/23/01 reported owning 2,749,250 shares which shows that Heartland increased their position by 423,700 shares over the 3rd quarter of 2000 and are now a 5% owner. Most instituions don't report this early and have until 02/15/01 to do so. I believe the 5% stake they took forced them to report early.

Hope you continue your coverage of IDCC.

Regards

Jim Lurgio

PS. I amazed that you beat Tero to the punch on this one. With Nokia going to IDCC for 3-G help I don't know how he missed it? "
