With shorts and longs that's tying up a lot of money to make it on the narrowing of the spread. With options you eliminate that problem but magnify the risks and comissions.

I agree with your assessment on index funds. I equate it to my blackjack experience. Most people lose, but there are a few people who beat the house with well-researched techniques and information the other players didn't have. Most people who gambled on intuitive approaches lost. I remember a book written by a guy named Scarne which was useless because he never tested in on a computer model. One guy, Thorp, was so successful, that the casinos changed the rules.

In the market, legal "inside" information is what you see people using and buying. Iomega was picked up by day traders long before the street fell in love with it. Because computer nerds were using the product and telling their friends about it while the suits were staring at charts.
