In the long run a successful cable modem service will reduce the the number of potential customers for DSL services. But in the nearer future competition from cable is probably a positive factor for the DSL companies. I think currently the rollout of DSL services is limited by the financial and personal resources that the phone companies are prepared to commit to the introduction of DSL service. And I think that the phone companies will be more serious about rolling out DSL service if the the risk of loosing their customers to cable companies prevents their option to simply do nothing.
