Internet Service Provider, Fuzion Wireless Communications, Selects Adaptive Broadband's Packet-Based, High-Speed Wireless Broadband Access System
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 18, 1999--ADAPTIVE BROADBAND CORPORATION (Nasdaq National Market: ADAP) announced today that it has signed a contract with Boca Raton-based Fuzion Wireless Communications (Fuzion), to supply the 5 GHz (U-NII) version of its point-to-multipoint wireless broadband network access product family, AB-Access(TM) for deployment of a broadband wireless network providing high-speed Internet access across the state of Florida. The first cities that are due to roll out beginning July 1, 1999, are Boca Raton/Ft. Lauderdale, Miami and Palm Beach.
Using AB-Access, Fuzion's wireless network offers a plethora of bundled services that other ISPs are unable to offer with current network infrastructure technology. The wireless network will be interconnected via an ATM backbone. Adaptive Broadband's AB-Access high-speed Internet access product will provide Fuzion's subscribers with wireless Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) and Ethernet connections with bi-directional speeds of up to 25 Mbps. Fuzion's customers will be able to take advantage of simultaneous video conferencing, full-motion streaming video, and high-speed connections to the Internet over a single connection. Fuzion plans to offer commercial service in the fourth quarter of 1999. ''Fuzion is indicative of the new-breed ISP choosing our unique wireless technology that offers high-speed ''bursty'' Internet connectivity while simultaneously providing bandwidth for demanding multimedia applications. Our built-in ATM coupled, with AB-Access' proprietary technology embedded in its Media Access Control (MAC) layer provides Fuzion with a strategic advantage over other ISPs,'' commented, Dr. Daniel L. Scharre Adaptive Broadband's Chief Technology Officer.
Wireless Market Heating Up
Fuzion Wireless Communications is among the growing ranks of wireless Internet and other telecommunications service providers throughout the United States that are looking towards the unlicensed spectrum as a catalyst for quick deployment of a true point-to-multipoint system. David Frank, chief executive officer of Fuzion, commented, ''We are excited about the new opportunities made available through wireless broadband technologies. With the superior advancements offered by the Adaptive Broadband products, coupled with the technical strengths of Fuzion Wireless Communications, we intend to provide the highest quality of true broadband Internet services available in the market today.''
Adaptive Broadband Packet-On Demand(TM) Technology Delivers Walk About Internet Access, Instant Provisioning
AB-Access is a key component of Adaptive Broadband's strategic plan that focuses company resources on delivering end-to-end wireless broadband solutions for telecommunications and service providers world-wide. As data traffic over takes voice traffic, providers are moving away from dedicated circuit-based, to packet-based network infrastructures. Packet-based networks offer providers an efficient method to supply Internet, data, video, and multimedia applications over the same infrastructure. The ''packet-on-demand'' aspect of the AB-Access system fits well within this infrastructure shift and offers higher data rates (up to 25 Mbps) and superior bandwidth management than competitive alternatives, such as xDSL and cable modems. The patent-pending design of the AB-Access MAC layer also uniquely provides service companies with an instant provisioning capability and customers with portability for Internet and other data needs.
AB-Access at Any Frequency: 2-42 GHz
The core, patent-pending AB-Access technology was engineered to work at any frequency from 2-42 GHz. Adaptive's first releases of AB-Access are for applications that use the 5 GHz (U-NII) and 2.5 GHz MMDS frequency bands. Other frequencies are currently under development.
