Lagunas Norte

One of Barrick’s newest and lowest cost operations,
the Lagunas Norte mine -
is located on the Alto Chicama property -
in north-central Peru, 140 kilometers east of the coastal city
of Trujillo, and 175 kilometers north of Barrick’s Pierina mine.

The property lies on the western flank of the Peruvian Andes and
is at an elevation of 4,000 to 4,260 meters above sea level.

In 2006, its first full year of production, Lagunas Norte -
produced 1.1 million ounces of gold at -
total cash costs of $100 per ounce,
exceeding expectations.
Proven and probable mineral reserves as of December 31, 2006
are estimated at 8.8 million ounces of gold.

Minera Yanacocha -
is the largest gold producer in South America -
and is located high in the Andes Mountains, 48 kilometers
(30 miles) north of the city of Cajamarca,
and 375 miles (603 kilometers) north of Lima.

Newmont holds a 51.35% ownership interest,
with the Peruvian mining firm, Compania de Minas Buenaventura S.A.A
owning 43.65%.
The International Finance Corporation (IFC),
an arm of the World Bank, holds the remaining 5%.

Newmont began exploring in Peru in 1982 and identified the first
of many deposits at Yanacocha in 1986.
Production began in late 1993.

The presence of the World Bank guarantees the existence
of the highest standards of safety, environmental care,
and social responsibility.

After 10 years of exploration, in 1990, feasibility studies
started for works at a pilot heap leaching plant.
After successful results at the pilot plant were obtained,
the project began in 1992.
With the start of operations in Carachugo, the first bar of gold
