The new base stations and frequencies strengthen the company's leadership position by further increasing coverage and capacity on the Motient(TM) network (formerly ARDIS) -- the largest two-way wireless data network in the country.
The 2000th base station -- a transmission tower and related electronic equipment used to send/receive messages to individual network customers -- was recently installed in Redmond, WA. Installation of new base stations increase the two-way in-building, on street, and rural area coverage and capacity of the Motient network, which reaches more than 220 million people -- 45 million more than its nearest competitor.
The Motient network provides connections of 19.2 Kbps and currently extends coverage to 99 percent of the nation's 500 most populous metropolitan areas. During the past year, Motient has added base stations in virtually every corner of the U.S. Coverage and capacity has been increased in large metropolitan areas, such as: Miami, FL, Seattle, WA, New York, NY and Los Angeles, CA. Large cities are not the only focus of expansion for the Motient network, but smaller ones as well -- Valencia, CA, Hartford, WI, Wantagh, NY, Burke, VA, Perrysburg, OH, and Laughlin, NV to name a few.
``The activation of the 2000th base station is a milestone for the Motient network,'' said Dennis Matheson, Motient senior vice president and CTO. ``Since its inception in 1990 as the first commercial two-way wireless data network, the Motient network has doubled in size. Our network is unmatched in providing nationwide coverage and capacity, making Motient perfectly positioned to capitalize upon the unprecedented -- and seemingly unending -- demand for reliable wireless data communications.''
Motient also was one of five top bidders for new transmission frequencies recently allocated by the Federal Communications Commission. The additional frequencies allow Motient to increase existing coverage and system capacity in over thirty markets, including Tampa, FL, Norfolk, VA, Columbus, OH, Cincinnati, OH, and Oklahoma City, OK, among others, thus clearing the way to continue to grow their industry-leading network.
