Alcatel Gets Equipment Pacts From Chinese, South African Companies

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- French telecommunications-equipment maker
Alcatel SA said Monday it received two contracts, one from China's
Shandong PTA and another from South Africa's Telkom SA.
Alcatel (ALA) said the China contract involves building a dense-wave
division multiplexing link from Jinan to Qingdao, China, by next March
or April. The link will provide transmission capacity of 16 channels at
2.5 gigabits a second on each fiber pair.
Alcatel also said itss Alcatel Altech Telecoms venture with Altech
Co. received a contract to supply equipment potentially worth hundreds
of millions of rand to the South African telecommunications company.
Terms weren't disclosed.
Alcatel said the contract includes enhancing Telkom's existing
network in areas of South Africa and providing transmission network
elements, network management and the integration of the existing network
management equipment.
