Italy Ill-Prepared for 2000 Millennium Bug, Il Sole/24 Ore Says

Milan, Nov. 26 (Bloomberg) -- While Italy remains largely unprepared for computer problems that may emerge on Jan. 1, 2000 when some computer programs won't recognize the date, little government preparation is underway, financial daily Il Sole/24 Ore reported. While a government commission was formed in August to address the problem, it only met once before a government crisis made its future uncertain, now it's not clear if the commission still has the mandate, or the money, to prepare the country. On Dec. 11 the United Nations will hold a conference on the millennium bug in which government representatives will present their state of preparation and what future programs they'll carry out, the newspaper reported.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development said earlier this month that the Y2K problem won't have much effect on economic output other than to delay some lower priority work.
