I would argue that that is the way of the Speculator, and not that of an Investor. The Investor would cherish the possibility to buy 'on the cheap' that a low valuation provides. She would never prioritize taking steps to "get the valuation up" before actual business considerations. Attaining a higher PE would be at the very bottom on her list.

While a high valuation may not be unwelcome – especially not for those investors which are now in their "yield years" – it is something that a company should take action to attain. Companies should let the valuation come to them, not the other way around; they should certainly not chase it.

When a company chases a high valuation is a bright red flag for me. That shows that they've got their priorities all wrong. "Don't look at the board – the score takes care of itself."
