Steve 667,

Can anyone here give an idea as to how much of a patent lock SNDK has regarding CELLULAR PHONE flash memory?

I think the question that needs to be answered is WHY do cellular phones need flash memory at all? What "killer application" will drive demand for high density/high capacity flash memory where SanDisk is KING?

My relatives in Scandinavia have had cell phones for as long as I can remember. Ericsson and Nokia have been promoting cell phone use for a some time now. Most Swedes and Finns are born with a cell phone clipped onto their diaper. When I spoke with my father-in-law last he told me that there is a small memory card about the half the size of MMC that follows the phone user when he upgrades to the latest, greeatest cell phone model. In the housing for the battery there is a small cavity where the chip resides. It contains your phone number list and other personal data. I suspect this is a low density "garden variety" flash chip that practically anyone can produce. It is hard to invision this as a high margin, patent-protected item.

What specific applications in the cellular phone market will drive demand for the high capacity/high density chips that SanDisk/Toshiba will make?
