GI's Next Level Communications Partners with Broadcom Corp. to Deliver Lowest Cost xDSL Solutions for the NLevel3 System
CHICAGO, May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Next Level Communications (NLC), a subsidiary of General Instrument Corporation (NYSE: GIC), announced today that it has formed a partnership with Broadcom Corporation to incorporate Broadcom's BCM6010 QAMLink(TM) Scaleable DSL transceiver into NLC's NLevel3 SDA (Switched Digital Access) System.
NLC is the leader in switched digital access products, with the only high volume broadband FTTC contract for mass deployment. The NLevel3 System is currently being deployed by NYNEX in communities around Boston and will soon be deployed in New York City, Long Island and Westchester County, New York. The NYNEX contract calls for the deployment of 1 million lines with provisions for up to 5 million lines.
The NLevel3 SDA System, a Unified Access Platform, provides telephone companies with a future-proof solution at existing DLC equipment prices. With its low-cost flexible architecture, telephone companies can deploy a full service network that will accommodate increased customer bandwidth demands and evolving federal regulations while at the same time meet the cost and reliability requirements of their existing telephony revenue business.
NLC is incorporating the Broadcom BCM6010 QAMLink(TM) Scaleable DSL single chip transceiver into its NLevel3 SDA System to offer a very flexible set of twisted pair broadband solutions including:
* Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL) * Rate Adaptive Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber line (RADSL) * Very High-Speed Digital Subscriber Line (VDSL)
By incorporating this xDSL technology into the NLevel3 SDA System, twisted pair -based broadband services can be delivered to homes and businesses -- including high-speed Internet access and remote access for small office/home office (soho) applications. These services can also include full service MPEG2 digital video over the much higher VDSL speeds.
NLC is fully committed to standards and supporting interoperability. NLC has elected to start its offering with the Broadcom solution due to the capabilities this Scaleable DSL transceiver has available today. Some of the advantages driving NLC's selection of the Broadcom solution included:
* Very low cost single chip transceiver costing under $25 in volume * Very low chip power of approximately 1/2 watt depending on the application * Support for SDSL, RADSL and VDSL from the same single chip at both ends * A highly integrated .35um CMOS native ATM device with built-in A/D and D/A * Fully rate adaptive at under 1 bit/s increments from 0-52 Mb/s providing near optimal throughput * Powerful equalizer to combat cable impairments including RFI ingress * Supports BPSK, QPSK, QAM 16, 32, 64, 128 and 256 modulations * Flexible and software programmable, symbol rate and carrier frequency * Powerful Reed Solomon T=8 FEC with programmable on chip interleaver * All digital timing recovery and synthesis * Small 100 pin PQFP package and resulting high density for linecards and CPE * Broadcom's solutions use public domain technology and require no licensing fees or royalties * Broadcom's flexible implementation of the next generation BCM6010 will comply with the CAP/QAM standard currently being developed by ANSI T1E1 * Broadcom's unsurpassed track record in standards based QAM technology for high-speed cable modems and digital cable TV set top boxes
NLC is offering other xDSL linecards and CPE for its NLevel3 SDA System including both CAP and DMT. NLC will also license its technology to CPE manufacturers interested in developing CPE compatible with the NLevel3 SDA System and will work with Broadcom and any supplier of xDSL technology to insure interoperability.
